The Community Foundation of Abilene Makes Dream Come True

The Community Foundation of Abilene made a long-time Meals on Wheels dream come true!  Our Case Managers have been asking for laptop computers to use when making home visits for several years. When the Meals on Wheels Board of Directors researched it in 2011, there were a number of problems, but last year Meals on Wheels took another look at the Case Manager’s dream and it finally looked like that dream was within reach. If we could only find a way to purchase three laptops, software, etc!

In 2017 an application was submitted to the Community Foundation of Abilene (CFA) for a grant to be used to purchase three laptop computers.  The Case Managers were thrilled when the CFA approved our application in their fall funding cycle.  Now the Case Managers no longer have to hand write all of the information when making home visits. It is a great improvement over the practice of recopying everything by hand to make it legible and more complete.

Thanks to the Grant Distribution Committee, CFA Trustees and Foundation Donors, the Case Managers home visits are now much more efficient and reduce the time spent recording information in the home.  That also makes it possible for the Case Manager to focus on the individual and make the visits more meaningful.

Dreams do come true.  Just ask Nancy, Katie & Martha!

Breakfast Program Suspended Due to Lack of Funding
breakfast story
Meals on Wheels Plus is temporarily suspending its three-day-a-week breakfast program due to a financial shortfall. The community can help by making financial donations and also by volunteering to deliver meals. Whenever a volunteer driver isn’t available for a route, a staff person has to fill in and is paid mileage, which adds to expenses. To donate money or to volunteer, contact the office at 672-5050 or donate online. Checks may be mailed to Meals on Wheels Plus, 717 N. 10th St., Abilene, 79601.
