Home Delivered Meals

pic_client02Meeting the Need

Because many elderly and those with disabilities find that the cost for housing, utilities and medical expenses is so great, there is seldom enough money left to purchase food for an entire month. We also find that multiple health problems make preparation of a nutritious meal impossible for most of our clients. Meals on Wheels targets the frail elderly and adults who have a disability. Our clients must also have difficulty preparing nutritious meals and need the service.

Having a friendly volunteer deliver a hot meal five days a week insures that they have a well-balanced meal. A home delivered meal helps combat hunger and prevent malnutrition. In addition, daily contact with the volunteers who deliver meals helps to prevent emotional and mental depression, which are synonymous with social isolation.

Types of Meals
A hot lunch is served Monday through Friday. Breakfast for the next day is also delivered on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday to a limited number of recipients who live alone. Each menu is designed for everyone, including those who are diabetic, or someone who needs a low sodium/low fat diet.  In addition, Low Potassium, Soft and Pureed diets are available.

Meal Preparation
Menus are approved by a Registered Dietician and all meals are prepared by Meals on Wheels Plus paid cooks and volunteers in our state-of-the-art kitchen located in our building (see gallery below).

Meals and Recipients
Each recipient receives a hot family-style noon meal.  This consists of a meat entrée, a vegetable, a starch, bread, 2% milk or calcium fortified orange juice, and dessert. A weekly menu is always visible on our home page or you can view the monthly menu here.

While many Meals on Wheels recipients are age 60 or older, the program is also available for younger adults who have disabilities. Meals can be served on a long-term basis or for a week or two while someone recovers from a hospital stay or accident. Meals on Wheels serves people who live in the greater Abilene, Texas area regardless of their financial situation.

Meal Delivery
Meals are delivered each Monday through Friday between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The program is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day with a special holiday meal being served the day before each major holiday.

Meals are delivered to homebound individuals living in the Abilene, Hamby, Hawley, Hodges, and Potosi area. Meals are delivered by volunteer deliverers in their own vehicles at their own expense. Approximately 390 different volunteers are needed on a weekly basis to ensure meal delivery.

Meals on Wheels also deliver to one dialysis center in Abilene. Many of those served at the Dialysis Centers live in the surrounding area and must come to Abilene three times a week for treatment. We are able to provide a low potassium diet for these people.
